May 8/9 Season record: 11-5 Hoop Mountain Invitational Tournament in Foxboro, MA Synopsis: The U13 CT RoughRiders started their first game with five players, thanks to bumper to bumper traffic on the Mass Pike. Despite the circumstances the tea was able to muscle out a 52-37 win over Hoop Nation's Blue team. Rodley led the team in scoring with 19 points and Zach chipped in 10 of his own. Josh had a big game as well scoring 8 points and grabbing 11 boards. Game 2 was versus an inexperienced Boston Warriors team. Despite winning by a whopping score of 75-22, the RoughRiders showed good sportsmanship and did a good job running their sets. Dominic scored a career high 24 points and Isaiah hit a career high 5 three-pointers. After winning the first two games the RoughRiders made the championship bracket but were eliminated in the quarterfinal by the Hoop Nation Black team. Rodley scored 21 points to lead the team in the 72-52 loss. Despite an extreme size disadvantage the RoughRiders played Hoop Nation even on the boards. The downfall came from backcourt turnovers, sloppy passing, and poor free throw shooting as well as not getting to the line enough. The RoughRiders shot 4 of 13 from the stripe, while their opponent went 17 for 29. Can't win ballgames with stats like that. Weekend Leaders: The team owes big thanks to Robert Feiner and Barbara Hendrickson for their generosity and time this weekend as well as all of the mothers that allowed their boys out for the weekend. The RoughRiders will look to make a run in the State Championships next weekend in Hartford. ******************** |

April 24/25 Season record: 9-4 Team Mass Blast in Monson, MA Synopsis: The U13 RoughRiders opened the Team Mass Blast Tournament with a 49-40 win over the Mass Jaguars A Team. Zach set the game off right with three 3-pointers in the opening minutes. Josh had his season high of 10 points and Tom had 10 as well. The RoughRiders came out weak against the NorthStars opening the game down 16-6. The team battled back, led by Rodley's 24 point effort and got a 1 point lead in the second half on a go ahead 3-pointer by Isaiah. With one minute left, the RoughRiders found themselves down by 5 points. Two quick steals led to scores and with 10 seconds left Zach pulled up for a three from the top of the key. Despite getting hacked, no call was made and the NorthStars pulled out the game 60-56 denying the RoughRiders of revenge from last weekend and from any hope of making the championship. The difference in the game was free throw shooting with the NorthStars going 10/17 (6/6 to end the game) and the RoughRiders hitting a miserable 4/15. Alix played tough down low with 12 points and was missed down the stretch after fouling out. The RoughRiders came out with a mission Sunday morning, building a 19 point halftime lead over the Monson Mustangs. Dan had many steals and good passes, many of which led to fast break lay-ups for Zach, who finished with a season-high 22 points. Dominic also had a season-high of 11 points. Despite the best half of the year in the first half by the RoughRiders, defensive lapses and poor passing left the door open for the Mustangs who made it into a close game with clutch shooting. The RoughRiders ended up on top 70-67. The RoughRiders are off next weekend and pick-up again the following week at Hoop Mountain in Foxboro, MA. ******************** |

April 17/18 Season record: 7-3 RoughRiders Rumble in East Hartford, CT Synopsis: The U13 RoughRiders came into the weekend looking to claim their second championship of the season and to rid themselves of the bad taste of Boston. The first game of the tournament was a rematch of an elimination game in last year's state tournament. The RoughRiders came out on top 52-43 to claim the better end of the match versus Wins 4 Life (Blue). Although Wins 4 Life played tough down low, they weren't able to handle the strong backcourt duo of Zach (14 points) and Rodley (17 points). Looking ahead, the RoughRiders knew that a win in the second game versus CT NorthStars would result in a chance to play in the championship. With an eight-point lead in the middle of the second half, bad attitudes and poor effort got the better of certain players and the team went cold, going scoreless for six minutes straight. The NorthStars took advantage, taking a six point lead. Fatigue set in and fouls added up. The NorthStars won the game 65-54 taking the RoughRiders championship bid. Rodley led the team in scoring with 23 points. Dominic and Alix were tough on the boards all game scoring 7 and 10 respectively. The third game of the tournament held no value after an upsetting loss from the night before. The RoughRiders took down Wins 4 Life (Orange) 58-30. Dominic, Tom, and Alix all put in 10 points and Rodley and Isaiah each had 9 of their own. The RoughRiders will be in Monson, MA this weekend in the Team Mass Blast. ******************** |

April 10/11 Season record: 5-2 Boston Warriors Spring Shootout in Waltham, MA Synopsis: The U13 CT RoughRiders opened the weekend with a 60-47 win over Mass Elite. Big Tom led all scorers with 16 points, scoring most of his points out of the high post. Isaiah chipped in another 8 points, all on jump-shots. The win was especially significant for returning players who lost to several players on Mass Elite last year when they were Lynnfield. Despite big games from guards Rodley (19 points) and Zach (17 points) the RoughRiders lost 66-57 in Game 2 to the Shamrocks out of Worcester, MA. Foul trouble, poor rebounding, and terrible help defense allowed the Shamrocks to take a 19 point lead. Although the RoughRiders got momentum back and forced turnovers with the press there just wasn't enough time to fill the hole they dug. On Sunday the U13 RoughRiders faced one of the top teams in the area in BABC and the team did not play to their potential, taking a 73-45 spanking. Rodley opened the game by taking the ball to the rack twice and knocking down a three forcing BABC to use an early timeout down 7-1, but BABC was too tough on the offensive glass and the game got out of hand quickly. The RoughRiders will be hard at work this week in practice, getting ready for the RoughRider Rumble this upcoming weekend. ******************** |
